Fine Book & Manuscript Specialist
Potter & Potter Auctions of Chicago is now accepting applications for a full-time specialist cataloguer of rare books and manuscripts. The primary focus of the position is to acquire, organize, catalog, evaluate, and prepare regular fine book & manuscript auctions.
The candidate should have a substantial working knowledge of and interest in rare books, and three to five years experience cataloguing books for sale, either at an auction house or for a rare book dealer. Strong English writing and language skills are required, and the candidate should have well-developed academic abilities and pay strict attention to detail. The candidate should also possess:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Art, or related field preferred
- Exemplary communication skills, particularly client service skills, follow-up skills, and a strong sense of professionalism and discretion
- Proficiency in MS Office applications
- Industry-specific contacts
Responsibilities include acquisition of material, adherence to company style guide/standards, maintaining and classifying inventory, consignor and customer contact, and coordinating with other departments, conservators, etc. Familiarity with and regular use of pertinent reference sources is also required.
Other responsibilities include: meeting with consignors; responding to inquiries and provide condition reports; and providing estimates to potential consignors.
Applicants should provide a sample of previously cataloged items, and/or other writing samples. Salary is commensurate with experience, and includes benefits.
